We hear it preached from the rooftops: "Be kind always." I even have a sweatshirt that says something like this. But I think that idea can be misinterpreted. Being kind doesn't mean being fake. How much do you like it when you talk to someone and they are being sweet as honey and you know they are just blowing smoke up your you know what the whole time? Not a whole lot. And truly, that isn't kind. Now I'm not saying it's okay to be a jerk. That is a big "not acceptable" in my book. But kindness doesn't always have to be sugar coated. Being clear is kind. Being honest is kind. Being direct is kind. Just because someone tells you something you don't like, doesn't mean they are being rude. Maybe it was exactly what you needed to hear. So let's all be kind, but the genuine kind of kind.
